Are You Autistic and Looking for Flexible Mental Health Support?

Being autistic can bring many strengths, including creativity, honesty, attention to detail, and a unique way of experiencing the world. However, living in a world that is not always designed with neurodivergent people in mind can also feel exhausting and overwhelming.

Many autistic people experience challenges with anxiety, stress, emotional overwhelm, burnout, or low self-esteem. The pressure to mask autistic traits, navigate social situations, cope with sensory sensitivities, or manage daily responsibilities can take a significant emotional toll.

You may be experiencing:

  • Anxiety, excessive worry, or feelings of overwhelm.

  • Low mood or emotional exhaustion.

  • Social anxiety or fear of being misunderstood.

  • Burnout linked to masking or trying to meet others’ expectations.

  • Sensory overwhelm caused by noise, light, or busy environments.

  • Difficulty managing change, uncertainty, or transitions.

  • Struggles with confidence, self-esteem, or self-acceptance.

  • Feeling isolated, disconnected, or misunderstood by others.

  • Difficulties identifying or expressing emotions.

  • Negative or self-critical thoughts.

  • Challenges balancing work, education, relationships, or everyday responsibilities.

Online counselling offers a flexible and accessible way to receive support from the comfort of your own environment, without the added stress of travelling or being in unfamiliar spaces. I provide a safe, supportive, and neuro-affirming space where you can talk openly, without judgement, pressure, or the expectation to mask who you are.

How I Can Help Through Online Counselling

Online counselling provides the same therapeutic support as face-to-face counselling through secure video sessions, allowing you to access help wherever you feel most comfortable. Together, we can explore your experiences, mental health, and the challenges you may be facing in a way that respects your individuality and communication style. Rather than trying to change who you are, counselling focuses on helping you better understand yourself, identify your strengths, and develop strategies that work for you.

Online counselling can help you to:

  • Understand and manage anxiety, stress, or low mood.

  • Explore the impact of masking and autistic burnout.

  • Develop greater self-acceptance and confidence.

  • Learn ways to manage emotional and sensory overwhelm.

  • Understand and communicate your needs more effectively.

  • Build resilience and healthier coping strategies.

  • Navigate challenges within relationships, work, or education.

  • Explore identity and what being autistic means to you.

  • Reduce self-criticism and improve self-esteem.

  • Create boundaries and routines that support your well-being.

Many people find that attending counselling from their space helps them feel calmer, more relaxed, and more able to open up.

All you need for online counselling is:

  • A reliable internet connection.

  • A computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and microphone.

  • A private and comfortable space where you feel able to talk openly.

Confidentiality is an important part of counselling, and I use secure platforms to help protect your privacy throughout our work together.

My Person-Centred & Neuro-Affirming Approach

My approach to counselling is grounded in Person-Centred Therapy and guided by a neuro-affirming understanding of autism. I believe that you are the expert in your own experiences. My role is to provide a warm, accepting, and non-judgemental space where you feel genuinely heard, understood, and respected.

Sessions are led by your individual needs and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. There is no expectation to communicate in a particular way or fit into a standard therapeutic model. At Carlyn Miller Counselling, counselling is adapted to your preferences, communication style, and goals.

I do not integrate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) strategies when working with autism, as this can conflict with the logical and literal reasoning style often used by autistic individuals.

Instead, my approach focuses on supporting you to:

  • Explore physical and emotional signs of anxiety and overwhelm.

  • Understand the emotional impact of social masking and prevent burnout.

  • Use your interests and strengths as tools for emotional expression.

  • Build confidence in navigating difficult situations.

  • Develop practical routines and strategies that support emotional wellbeing.

  • Feel more accepted, understood, and empowered in your identity

My approach is not about changing your autistic traits or encouraging masking. Instead, I aim to work collaboratively with you, offering empathy, understanding, and practical support that respects and values your neurodivergent identity.
